Speed Awareness – Refresher

Speed Awareness – Refresher

Course Description

This online refresher course reinforces the importance of driving at safe speeds. It revisits essential concepts such as understanding speed limits, calculating stopping distances, and recognising the impact of excessive speed. By revisiting key statistics and principles, it helps drivers maintain a safe mindset behind the wheel and reduce their risk of involvement in speed-related incidents.

Who is this for?

This course is intended for drivers who have previously completed a Speed Awareness course (or similar) and need to refresh their understanding. It’s particularly suited to employees who drive for work, fleet drivers, or anyone who regularly drives in their job and wants to reinforce their knowledge of speed-related risks and safe driving practices.

Course Content:

  • Why speed matters: speed as a contributing factor in serious road collisions
  • Understanding speed limits on different types of roads (urban, rural, motorway)
  • Impact speed: how small increases in speed massively increase collision severity
  • Stopping distances: how speed, road conditions, reaction times, and distractions affect stopping
  • Factors influencing safe driving speed: weather, road surface, traffic, distractions
  • Behavioural insights: common motivations for speeding and how to recognise and manage them
  • Strategies for maintaining a safer driving speed, practical driving tips
  • Final assessment (20-question multiple-choice quiz) to confirm understanding

Course Benefits:

  • Strengthen their understanding of the real risks associated with excessive speed
  • Reaffirm how to interpret and stick to appropriate speed limits in different driving situations
  • Refresh knowledge about stopping distances and how they’re affected by speed and road factors
  • Develop safer driving habits and improve decision-making on the road
  • Lower the likelihood of speed-related incidents and improve road safety for themselves and others
  • Demonstrate to their employer (if driving for work) that they’ve completed up-to-date, relevant driver awareness training

Test and Certification:

At the end of the course, you will take a test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions with a required pass rate of 85%
Upon successful completion, you will be able to download and print a digital certificate if required. The main course certificate is valid for three years, with refresher courses available and recommended every 12 months.
