Local Exhaust Ventilation – Refresher

Local Exhaust Ventilation – Refresher

Course Description

This refresher course is designed to remind and update individuals on the proper operation, testing, maintenance and regulatory requirements of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems used to control airborne contaminants in the workplace. It revisits key principles of LEV engineering, performance monitoring, and compliance with regulations such as those under Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). The aim is to ensure that participants remain competent in recognising faults, verifying system performance, and maintaining workplace air-quality controls.

Who is this for?

This refresher training is intended for health & safety professionals, maintenance or facilities managers, engineers or supervisors who already have experience or training in LEV systems and wish to refresh their competence. It is particularly suitable for individuals responsible for inspecting, testing, maintaining or managing LEV systems in environments where airborne hazards (dust, fumes, vapours) may be present, ensuring continued compliance and safe operation of ventilation controls.

Course Content:

  • Brief overview of LEV systems: purpose, key components (hoods, ducts, fans, filters)
  • Review of airborne contaminants and exposure risk control via LEV
  • Legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., COSHH, inspection & testing intervals)
  • How LEV systems are meant to work and how to assess effectiveness (capture velocity, hood positioning, airflow)
  • Inspection, testing and maintenance procedures: identifying common faults and corrective actions
  • Responsibilities of employers and operators in managing LEV systems
  • Practical reminders / best practice for improving air-quality controls and prolonging LEV system effectiveness
  • A short multiple-choice test to confirm retention of knowledge (typically pass-rate required).

Course Benefits:

  • Reinforce their understanding of how LEV systems protect against airborne hazards
  • Be better equipped to identify and correct faults, thus maintaining system performance and worker safety
  • Keep up-to-date with regulatory requirements and inspection/testing expectations
  • Contribute to improved air quality in the workplace and reduced exposure risk
  • Demonstrate professional competency via a recognised certificate, which supports audit, compliance and training-records
  • Provide assurance to the organisation that LEV systems are being managed effectively and safely

Test and Certification:

At the end of the course, you will take a test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions with a required pass rate of 85%
Upon successful completion, you will be able to download and print a digital certificate if required. The main course certificate is valid for three years, with refresher courses available and recommended every 12 months.

Accreditation:

All our courses are independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.

Course Duration:

Main Course Duration: Approximately 30 minutes (excluding the final test time)
