ISO 14001:2026 New Environmental Standard

ISO has published ISO 14001:2026, the latest edition of its environmental management systems standard, introducing updated guidance to help organisations respond to today’s environmental priorities and strengthen performance.

Published on 15 April 2026, the revised standard updates ISO 14001:2015 with clearer wording, improved usability and greater emphasis on climate change, biodiversity, pollution and resource use.

What has changed

• Closer alignment with other ISO management system standards.
• Stronger emphasis on leadership, accountability and lifecycle thinking.

What it means for organisations

Organisations certified to ISO 14001:2015 are expected to begin transition planning now, with implementation likely to be required by April 2029.

For organisations new to certification, the revised standard offers an updated framework for managing environmental responsibilities and demonstrating improvement.

The revision reflects growing expectations for organisations to show clear, measurable environmental progress.
